INTRODUCTION
Developing Packaging from Scratch
While I was at Bottega Louie, I worked closely with the Vice President of Patisserie Operations. Of the patisserie items, the macarons were the most famous and the best selling. Of the macaron package offerings, the five piece box was the best selling. As the stock of 5 piece boxes began to dwindle, we took the opportunity to develop a new 6 piece macaron box.
CHALLENGE
Solving Multiple Problems
Most customers that purchase the 5 piece box would also typically ask for an additional macaron. We developed the 6 piece box to bridge this gap between the business and customer behavior. The simplest solution would be to expand the five piece Box to fit an additional one. However, the five piece box fit the macarons vertically on its side, causing a large number of breakages and product waste. The six piece box design must have the macarons lie flat to reduce expenditure on waste from breakages.
APPROACH
Getting My Hands Dirty
Supplied with macarons from the pastry kitchen, I took 6 macarons and began to lay them out flat to start. The macaron boxes are enclosed in a food-safe rigid box construction so I used thick cardstock that accurately matched the thickness of the rigid boxes and began to build a paper model of the box to scale.
BRIEF ITEM EYEBROW
Project Header
I started to build dimensions and construct the box around the macarons. A thinner sheet of cardstock was used to create the backing and the dividers to keep the macarons in place while in the box. I then created the lid to fit the box snug without too much friction. I then took precise measurements of the model and turned it into a flat die-line and designed the artwork.

The advantage of using a paper model is that the designer could be in control of the tolerances and make adjustments before committing to any digital work. Only once the paper model was completely perfect, did I begin to build the die-lines and design the artwork to be printed.
